Why Are Scented Candles So Expensive? What You’re Really Paying For

Why Are Scented Candles So Expensive?
The price of a scented candle can vary from a few pounds to well over £100. The difference is rarely explained by one ingredient alone. Fragrance quality, wax, vessel, manufacturing scale, testing, packaging and the amount of hand work involved all contribute to cost.
Fragrance is a major part of the cost
A well-made scented candle needs a fragrance formula that performs in wax, not simply a pleasant-smelling oil. Different materials vary greatly in price, and a formula may need testing to find the right balance between scent, burn performance and stability.
Small-batch production costs more
Hand pouring, weighing, wick placement, curing, finishing and quality checks all take time. Large factories can spread those costs across very high volumes. A small-batch maker cannot, but the trade-off is closer control over each production run.
The vessel and packaging matter
Glass, ceramics, labels, boxes and protective packaging can represent a significant proportion of the final cost. Refillable or artisan-made vessels cost more than basic mass-produced containers, but they can also be kept and reused.
Testing is part of the product
A candle has to be tested as a complete system: wax, wick, fragrance and vessel. That work is largely invisible to the customer, but it is part of producing a candle that burns as intended.
Is an expensive candle always better?
No. Price alone is not proof of quality. A better question is what you are paying for: materials, craftsmanship, fragrance design, vessel, testing, provenance, brand or packaging. A clear product page should help you understand that value.
If you want to see the process rather than simply read about it, our London candle-making workshops take guests through fragrance selection and hand pouring step by step.
