Candle Fire Safety Week: 9 Rules for Burning Candles Safely at Home This Winter
Share
A candle can bring a gentle glow and a familiar fragrance to a winter evening. It also has an open flame, which deserves care every time it is lit. For Candle Fire Safety Week, running from 26 October to 1 November 2026 as part of the UK’s Fire Kills campaign, we’re sharing practical candle safety tips to help you enjoy real candles thoughtfully.
We make candles by hand in London, so we know how much attention goes into wax, wick and vessel. We also know that safety is part of the craft. These nine rules combine fire service guidance with STANZA Artigiana’s candle-care recommendations. Always follow the safety instructions supplied with your own candle; when they differ, follow the candle’s label.
1. Know the risk before you light
UK fire services report between two and five house fires a day are started by candles. The colder months bring darker evenings, more candlelight and seasonal decorations, so a little extra care is especially important.
Recent incidents are a sobering reminder. Following a fatal house fire in Wallasey, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service issued a candle-safety warning. In Chelmsford, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reminded residents of the risks after a candle left beside a bed started a flat fire. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has also shared autumn safety advice ahead of the campaign.
These examples are not a reason to be afraid of candlelight; they are a reason to use it carefully. Before lighting, look around the room: check what is nearby, whether the candle is stable and whether you can keep an eye on it until it is fully extinguished.
2. Trim your wick before every burn
Let the candle cool completely, then trim the wick to approximately 5 mm (¼ inch) before lighting. A shorter wick helps the flame burn more steadily and can reduce excess soot. Remove any trimmed wick debris from the wax before you relight the candle.
Keep the wick centred and upright. If it has shifted, or the wax contains debris, do not light the candle until it is in good condition. Small checks before each burn help you enjoy a calmer, more consistent flame.
3. Give the first burn time to finish
For STANZA Artigiana candles, allow 2–3 hours for the first burn, or until the wax has melted evenly across the surface to form a full melt pool. This helps reduce tunnelling, where wax melts down the centre but remains along the sides of the vessel.
Stay in the room and keep the candle in sight throughout. Do not extend the burn beyond the maximum time on its label to achieve a full melt pool. Candle sizes and instructions vary, so treat the maker’s guidance as the final word.

4. Keep burn times short and controlled
Do not burn a STANZA Artigiana candle for more than 4 hours continuously. Extinguish it sooner if the flame becomes unusually high, the vessel appears damaged or the candle behaves differently from its usual burn.
Stop using the candle when approximately 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom. This helps prevent the vessel from overheating as the candle reaches its end. Let the candle cool fully before moving it, handling the vessel or considering a refill.
5. Place candles with intention
Set a candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface in a suitable holder. Keep burning candles at least 10 cm apart, and position them well away from curtains, bedding, books, furniture, clothing and decorations.
Avoid draughts, vents and air currents, which can disturb the flame and contribute to uneven burning. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets, and never leave a candle where it could be knocked over. Never move a candle while it is lit or while the wax is hot.
Take particular care with tealights: fire services warn that they can become very hot, so do not place them directly on surfaces that could melt or catch fire. For additional guidance, read the London Fire Brigade’s candle safety advice.
6. Never leave a flame alone
Never leave a lit candle unattended, not even for a short errand to another room. Extinguish it fully before leaving the room, and always put it out before going to sleep. A candle should not be left burning while you doze, even if you expect to wake soon.
The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service guidance for Candle Fire Safety Week and other fire services make this advice clear: unattended candles can quickly ignite nearby materials. If you are going out or turning in for the night, make extinguishing the candle part of your routine.

7. Choose a well-made candle, and check it before use
Soy wax does not make a candle risk-free: soy candle safety still depends on the wick, vessel, placement and how the candle is used. Choose a candle with clear care instructions and a wick suited to its vessel. Before every burn, check that the glass has no cracks or chips, and that the wax is free of loose debris.
A recycled-glass vessel should be treated with the same care as any candle container. Do not burn a candle in damaged glass, or in a decorative vessel that has not been made and assessed for candle use. After the candle has cooled, ask a professional to assess a vessel before arranging a refill; not every jar or container is suitable for reuse as a candle.
At STANZA Artigiana, we assess refill vessels before agreeing to a refill. Find out more about our candle refill service, or explore our handmade candle collection.
8. Make sure your smoke alarms are ready
Fit working smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them at least monthly. A functioning alarm can give you valuable warning if a fire starts, helping you and your household get out safely. Keep exits clear and make sure everyone at home knows the escape route.
Include candle safety in your evening check: extinguish every candle completely, confirm that the flame is out, and make sure a clear route to the exit is available. For advice tailored to your home, visit the government’s Fire Kills prevention guidance.
9. Choose LED candles when you cannot supervise a flame
If you cannot remain in the room, choose an LED or battery-operated candle instead. Fire services recommend flameless candles as a safer alternative, particularly around children, pets, costumes and seasonal decorations. They can offer a soft glow without requiring an open flame.
Use a real candle when you can give it your attention; choose an LED candle when you cannot. That distinction makes it easier to enjoy the ambiance without compromising the care your household deserves.

Make candle safety part of the ritual
A mindful candle routine is simple: trim the wick to 5 mm, choose a stable heat-resistant surface, keep the flame in sight and extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep. Follow the candle’s own label, and ask for advice if its vessel is damaged or its burn seems unusual.
At STANZA Artigiana, we believe fragrance is a decorative layer and an emotional ritual: one best enjoyed with care. Explore our handmade candle collection, read our candle care and safety guidance, or discover our refill service. Let the evening feel warm, considered and safe.
